Constructed in phases, the project converted the original City of Fort Myers central water plant into the museum. The first phase involved extensive demolition of old water plant while later phases involved conversion of a lime stone storage facility to a theater, construction of the new museum building, renovation of the active water tower to a signboard visible for miles, preservation of a historic WPA pump building, and dealing with environmental difficulties remaining from an abandoned coal tar tank used by the City’s natural gas utility.
