The year was 1891. The city: Grand Rapids. The mission: to build. Our founders' resumes were written in the lines of their hardened, calloused hands. Those same hands helped write the story of our city, building by building.

Over 125 years later, Owen-Ames-Kimball Co. (O-A-K) is the longest-standing commercial construction manager and general contractor in the State of Michigan and two-time recipient of the Michigan Contractor of the Year award. We have also maintained a steady presence in Southwest Florida for over 30 years. Our offices are located in: Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo (Michigan); and Fort Myers, Naples, and Port Charlotte (Florida).

Coupled with our unique employee-ownership structure, our business culture of trust and respect plays a major role in our success. We are big enough to handle the most complex projects, and small enough to care. In fact, the O-A-K commitment to building strong communities has allowed us to complete projects in 39 of the 50 United States.

At O-A-K, we are grateful for our past, for the success of our founders. And although many things have changed over the past century, we continue to build every project just as our founders did, with the future in mind.

As an employee-owned company, the majority of our team members enjoy a leadership role on every project he or she oversees. While titles and accolades do not define the type of people we are, we have the privilege of being led, from an executive standpoint, by some of the most experienced professionals in the industry, leaving the egos at the door.

Our O-A-K Corporate Board of Directors is made up of members from both our Michigan and Florida operations, ensuring corporate unity and representation from both of these very important geographic regions.   • Frank Stanek, PE, LEED AP

    Our youngest Corporate President & CEO in history, Frank earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from Michigan State University and joined the O-A-K team in 1996. He has been in his current role since January 1, 2013. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Michigan, a licensed General Contractor and a LEED Accredited Professional.

    When did you realize the construction industry was for you?
    In high school I started working for an excavation and concrete company. I really enjoyed it. I went to college to become a Civil Engineer but in the back of my mind I never felt that I could sit behind a desk all day. The construction industry provides a wide range of variety and diversity that I truly enjoy.

    What do you do in your free time?
    I spend time with my family, hunting, fishing, and doing other outdoor activities. To really relax and unwind from work, I like to cook. I am not saying I am a good cook, but I enjoy trying to make different dishes.

  • John C. LaBarge, Jr., CPA

    John is a West Michigan native and economic enthusiast. He holds his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Administration from Hope College and is a Certified Public Accountant.

    What can you say about our clients over the years?
    Our clients have been extremely loyal and supportive of O-A-K. We are proud of our retention rate and it reinforces to all of our employees the value all of us as a team bring to our clients on each and every project.

  • Josh Szymanski, PE, LEED AP

    With over 16 years of experience in the commercial construction industry, Josh specializes in pre-construction delivery and institutional projects. He holds his Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Michigan Technological University and his Master's in Civil Engineering from Purdue University. He is a registered and licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Michigan and a LEED Accredited Professional.

    Why did you choose the construction industry?
    I've always been a hands-on, mechanically inclined person and have enjoyed the satisfaction that comes with building.  After pursuing bachelor's and master's degrees in civil engineering, construction seemed a natural choice to remain close to the action and achieve the tangible results associated with renovating or creating something new.

    What else do you enjoy?
    If it involves being in or on water (frozen or thawed) - I'm in.

  • Jeremy Amshey

    Jeremy was born and raised in Rockford, Michigan, where he continues to live today with his wife and three children. He joined the O-A-K team in 2008. In his current role, Amshey oversees the project management department and field operations, including personnel resources, project planning and logistics, and program management.

    Why do you like working at O-A-K?
    I have spent much of my life in the construction industry and have worked for and with a wide range of companies in this time. O-A-K is special. The culture here is intentional. We work together, help one another, and empower our employees to prioritize their families. We value and care for each other and as a result, the work is exceptional.

    What do you do in your free time?
    I love deer hunting in the fall (especially now that my kids can occasionally join me), and in the summertime we camp quite a bit. Also, although my profession doesn’t call for much work with my hands, I still really enjoy carpentry. That was my first real job and I have always enjoyed building things that look great. My family has taken full advantage, as I have replaced, repaired, or renovated pretty much every room in my house and the last home as well.   

  • Jeff Weber

    With nearly two decades of experience in both residential and commercial construction, Jeff brings an in-depth knowledge to all of his projects. He attended Grand Valley State University, and he joined our team in 2007.

    What have you learned from working at O-A-K?
    I have learned that while building a great building is important. It’s equally important to listen to our clients and build strong relationship within the community.

    What else are you passionate about?
    In my free time in enjoy working on our family farm and going to our kids’ sporting events. 

  • Tom Stanek

    Tom was born and raised in Southwest Michigan and has completed many projects throughout the Midwest. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Construction Science Management from Western Michigan University.

    What made you interested in a construction career?
    Even though my family has some deep roots in this industry, it’s not the reason I chose it.  Honestly, I was at WMU in a volleyball class and met a now longtime friend, who introduced me to the Construction Management Program.  I immediately knew that was the curriculum I wanted to pursue.

    When did you decide this was definitely the industry for you?
    When I couldn’t master the volleyball skills and knew the Olympics and Professional Beach Volleyball were out of the question. 

  • Frank Bartoszek, LEED AP

    Frank joined O-A-K in 1985 after graduating from Bowling Green State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Construction Technology. 

    What has O-A-K taught you about yourself?
    The setting of and accomplishment of long-term goals is much more satisfying than the realizing of short term gratification.

    What is your most embarrassing moment?
    Any time I arrive for a meeting one day early.

  • Adam Tweedy

    Adam came to O-A-K in 2012 after spending three years as a construction estimator on the east side of the state. A graduate of Michigan State University and Grand Rapids native, Adam specializes in commercial projects - both industrial and office. 

    Why did you choose the construction industry?
    I’ve always liked building things and seeing things come together, and the construction industry provided me an opportunity to be a part that, while also not having to work outside in the winter.

    What do you do in your free time?
    I spend a lot of time at our cabin in Northern Michigan, being a Michigan state fan, and fixing things that break around my house.

    What else should we know about you?
    I’m a frustrated golfer. We have two dogs (who break the things around my house), my wife has a cat, and we have a newborn baby boy.

  • Rachael Martemucci

    After receiving her bachelor’s degree from GVSU in 2007, Rachael worked for a Grand Rapids-based public relations firm that focused primarily on local millage and political campaign communications. She joined O-A-K in 2010. In her current role, she oversees corporate marketing, creation of proposals and presentations, and technology initatives.

    When did you realize this was the industry for you?
    After about a year at O-A-K I realized I wanted to stay with the firm for the long haul. The construction industry is fast-paced and filled with smart, interesting people. I learn something new every day.

    What do you do in your free time?
    I’m a full-time working mom (which I love) and spend most of my time outside of work playing with my daughter, running around town with family, and enjoying my husband’s gourmet cooking. 

  • Dave Dale

    Dave worked in the construction trades throughout his college years. After working in Colorado as a job superintendent, he relocated to Southwest Florida. He joined O-A-K in 1989 and was promoted to the Board of Directors in 2004. In 2008, he became president of O-A-K. He holds a State of Florida Class A general contractor license, a Florida roofing contractor license, a South Carolina general contractor license, a commercial pilot/flight instructor license, is a PADI/Dive Master, and is 4G welding certified.

  • Jan Prindle

    Jan was born and raised in Colorado. She moved to Southwest Florida in 1981 and attended Edison State College. She joined O-A-Ks accounting department in 2000 and in January 2013 was promoted to Manager of Accounting Services & Human Resources.

    What can you say about our clients over the years?

    Our clients have been loyal to us for so many years.  I believe they appreciate that O-A-K is unique in the fact that we’ve been in business for over 120 years and our morals and values mimic those of our clients.  They know when they hire us we will give them a quality product and that’s one less thing for them to worry about.  It’s an awesome feeling knowing you work for a company that has that kind of reputation.

    What can you say about our employees over the years?

    I don’t think we’ve ever had an employee that didn’t feel as if they were family. We are a family and when you have employees that feel that strongly about their work place they will give 110% which ultimately benefits the clients. We don’t have a high turnover rate, as a matter of fact; many of our employees are approaching the 10-year mark with the others approaching the 15, 20 and 30 year marks.  Our employees are as solid as the company they work for.

    What have you learned while working at O-A-K?

    I wouldn’t even know where to start.  I’ve grown so much in the 13 years I’ve been here.  O-A-K believes in education and encourages its employees to take whatever courses they feel will help them do their jobs.

    What do you do in your free time?

    Cooking is my main passion.  I love to make everything I can from scratch.  I should have been Italian as I want to feed everyone I see!  I’ve planted an herb garden and I like working in the yard.  My arts and crafts are very relaxing and of course we like to go fishing and boating whenever we can.

    What else should we know about you?

    I’m recently married and have two children ages 22 and 27, and a 5 year old grandson.  We like to get together with our family and friends and have cookouts.  Once in awhile I’m able to get together with my friends and go horseback riding.  I was born and raised in Colorado and we had horses so I would enter the horse shows on the weekends.  The speed events were my favorite.  I took several trophies in barrel racing and pole bending.  Favorite foods are pasta and seafood.

  • Mike Woods

    Mike began his employment in the construction field at the age of 16, working alongside his father at John Woods Construction for a number of years. In 1979 he started his own site Construction Company where he focused on site prep. Mike has over thirty years of experience working on numerous road and site prep projects in south Florida. He also owned, managed and later on sold his underground utility company. Since joining OAK as a site superintendent he has gained the experience in airport construction. Mike also has extensive knowledge in heavy equipment and all phases of complete site work and road construction.

  • Matthew Zwack

    Matthew, a LEED Accredited Professional, became involved in the construction industry in 1996, working his way to Foreman for Mills Construction Company in South Dakota, where he built commercial buildings from the ground up.  After moving to Southwest Florida and becoming a Lead Finish Carpenter, responsible for supervising a crew which completed trim packages for high end homes, condos, and commercial buildings, he joined Owen-Ames-Kimball in 2005 as an assistant superintendent.  His experience with public, private, civil, and architectural projects allows Matt to oversee any project with confidence, and he expects quality work from himself and those he supervises on behalf of the client. 

     

    Why did you choose the construction industry & when did you first know it was for you? 

    I always knew I wanted to build things. Even as a little kid I knew I would be a construction worker. Most of my toys were either toy trucks and tractors, or toy saws, hammers, and tool boxes. I grew up with a father that was in construction, and he was always very proud of the projects he worked on. Growing up, I knew I wanted to do the same thing, and have the same feeling of pride for my own completed projects.

     

     What can you say about our clients over the years?

    Our clients have been great to us over the years. They have been very loyal, and I believe it is because they know we will do our best to make their projects run as smooth as possible. They know that our employees are very dedicated to making sure the projects are delivered on time, and with the highest quality.

     

    What can you say about our employees over the years?

    O-A-K has very loyal and dedicated employees. They all are very proud to work for O-A-K and are willing to do whatever it takes to ensure everything runs smoothly. 

     

     What do you do in your free time?

    I enjoy working on various little projects when I am not at work. I am currently working to restore a 1970 Airstream camper.

  • Abel Natali

    Abel, a LEED Accredited Professional, graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in finance and business administration from the University of Florida. He was recognized for his outstanding academic achievement by being placed on the Dean’s List. He joined Owen-Ames-Kimball (O-A-K) in 2006 as a job site superintendent for the largest project to date for O-A-K, the Marco Marriott Resort and Spa $52 million renovation. Abel has served his community through Habitat for Humanity, the University of Florida/Alachua School District Champs Mentoring Program, and the Harry Chapin Food Bank. He graduated from the Greater Fort Myers Chamber of Commerce Leadership Program in 2011.

  • Steve Richards

    Steve is a graduate of Purdue University with an Associates of Arts degree in Civil Engineering Technology and a Bachelor of Science degree in Construction Technology. Steve began his career with Owen-Ames-Kimball Company in 1993 as a project manager and moved into a full-time estimating capacity in 1995. He was promoted to the O-A-K Board of Directors and as Vice President of the Fort Myers office in 2004. He is active in the Lee Building Industry Association (Lee BIA) as a board member and is this years President.

    Why did you choose the construction industry?

    I realized that the work in the construction industry is very dynamic and varied.  Every day can bring new, unique and rewarding challenges.

    When did you realize this was the industry for you?

    In my first year at college, I realized that there was a need for people in the areas of construction project management and estimating.  I then made my switch to seek a BS degree in Construction Management.  I am glad to be associated with the construction industry.

    What can you say about our clients over the years?

    We’ve had great clients over the years.  Each client has been unique and different and each has brought interesting rewards and challenges to their respective projects.

    What can you say about our employees over the years?

    Over the years, I’ve been honored to be surrounded by a group of hard-working and dedicated employees from all positions in the company.

    What have you learned while working at O-A-K?

    I have definitely learned that working hard for and providing great services to clients can pay great dividends in repeat business from clients.  There is also great personal satisfaction by delivering a great construction product to a client.

    What do you do in your free time?

    My wife and I enjoy traveling when we get the opportunity. 
     

  • Ellen Bisogno

    At an early age, Ellen knew she wanted her career to be in the construction field, just as many of her family members were.  Ellen entered the construction field more than 20 years ago as an owner’s representative for construction of a 350 room hotel and a 70 unit condominium complex as well as managing the completion of three five-story office buildings. Ellen’s professional experience as regional operations and facilities manager, director of operations and owner/president make her well-equipped to manage multiple, large scale projects and to bring them in on time and under budget.

     

    Why did you choose the construction industry?

    My family was in construction from the time I was born.  I always found it exciting and interesting.  My father would take me to the job sites when I was old enough and it just stuck to me that this is what I wanted

    When did you realize this was the industry for you?

    I wanted a mix of sitting behind a desk and being out in the field.  I also loved watching things go from nothing to a beautiful end product, whether it was interior construction or new buildings

     

    What else should we know about you? (Sports, family, favorite foods, etc)

    I love to shoot my revolver.  All of my family (both sides) is Italian, thus we are extremely loud.  People think I’m yelling, when I’m just talking normal.

  • Jan-Erik Hustrulid

    Jan-Erik has 13 years’ experience in residential real estate and the construction industry. In 2004 he became broker and co-owner of a real estate company with his twin brother. He chose to expand his career with OAK Florida because of the strong work ethic and character of the OAK Company as a whole. He specializes in pre-construction delivery and client relations. He holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Computer Information Systems from Florida Gulf Coast University. He is also a member of many associations, board member of multiple charities, incoming chair member of The Heights Foundation in Fort Myers and on the Board of Trustee’s for Charlotte Local Education Foundation.
