Owen-Ames-Kimball recently celebrated the completion of the State of Colorado Bureau of Investigation’s new Toxicology Lab, a project led by Project Manager Juan Martinez Jr. and Senior Superintendent Juan Martinez Sr.
This project has been years in the making. Funding for the lab was approved approximately two years ago, but when the project was initially bid, it came in over budget. The O-A-K team worked diligently alongside the owner and design team to value engineer the project, bringing it within budget without compromising quality or function.
The new facility includes a wet lab and instrument lab designed to give forensic scientists advanced tools for investigations. With these new spaces, CBI now has the capability to process toxicology samples more efficiently and consistently meet critical deadlines—an essential component of their mission.
Delivering this highly technical project required close coordination and collaboration. O-A-K brought everyone together, creating a true partnership between the owner, architect, and contractor. As challenges arose, the team worked quickly to problem solve, maintain clear communication, and keep the project on schedule.
Construction also took place within an occupied facility, meaning the CBI’s vital DNA database had to remain fully operational throughout. To achieve this, O-A-K carefully demolished an existing dock and sequenced construction in a way that allowed ongoing operations to continue seamlessly.
At the project’s completion, the CBI team surprised Juan Sr. and Juan Jr. with a special “Juan in a Million” award in recognition of their leadership and dedication.
Congratulations to Juan Sr. and Juan Jr. on this well-deserved recognition, and to the entire O-A-K team for delivering a facility that will strengthen forensic science across the state for years to come.
